Bring your whole family tree, and see exactly what comes with it.

Years of work deserve a careful move. Before anything is imported, Pecktree shows what's in your GEDCOM file and what needs a look. Afterward you see what came in, and your family tree is ready.

How does GEDCOM work?
GEDCOM is the universal standard for exchanging family tree data. Your data is parsed locally in your browser — nothing is sent to our servers until you confirm the import.

How to switch.

Four steps. Your old program stays untouched: Pecktree only reads the export file.

1

Export from your current program

Almost every genealogy program can create a GEDCOM file. The guide below shows where to find that option in each one. The file ends in .ged.

Import into Pecktree

Drag the file into Import & Export. It's read in your browser, and nothing goes to the server until you confirm the import. You choose a new or existing project and the proband.

Check what came in

Before the import, you see the counts and the points of attention: what Pecktree can fix, which source types need your judgment, and what was skipped. Afterward you see the totals and suggestions for improving your tree.

Keep working, or go back

You can always export a complete GEDCOM 5.5.1 file again, even on a free account. If you share the file, leave out living people.

Export GEDCOM
Download your current project as a GEDCOM 5.5.1 file for use in other software.
Exclude living peopleLeave out people who are still living — or born less than 100 years ago without a death date — including their relationships and events.
Export GEDCOM

A guide for each program.

Where to find the GEDCOM export in the program you use now. Menu names can differ slightly between versions. Dutch programs show their menus in Dutch, so those are given as you'll see them.

ProgramWhere to find the exportGood to know
Family Tree MakerDesktop program File › ExportChoose Entire file, set Output format to GEDCOM, and save the .ged file. Media files aren't included, only links to them. Saved publications and tasks don't come along.
RootsMagicDesktop program File › Export Data › GEDCOM FilePick a folder and file name, export all people, and click OK. The privacy options decide how living people are exported. Media goes along as links.
Legacy Family TreeDesktop program File › Export to › GEDCOM FileUnder Produce file for, choose GEDCOM 5.5 (Standard), then click Select File Name and START EXPORT. Legacy can export all of your family file or just part of it. Choose all of it.
GrampsFree desktop program Family Trees › Export…In the Export Assistant, choose GEDCOM as the output format, check the export options, and choose where to save the file. Without a filter, everyone in the tree is exported. Media files stay on your computer; the file only lists their paths.
FamilySearchShared online tree No GEDCOM exportFamilySearch can't download the shared tree itself and points to partner programs. In the free RootsMagic Essentials, create a new file with Download from an Online Tree › FamilySearch, then export it as GEDCOM. You choose a starting person and how many generations to bring in. After the import, check the counts.
AncestryOnline family tree Trees › More (⋯) › Tree Settings › Export treeClick Export, then Download Your GEDCOM File. Only the tree's owner can do this; no membership is needed. The file arrives in a zip: unzip it and drag the .ged file into Pecktree. Photos and other media aren't included.
MyHeritageOnline family tree Family tree › Manage trees › Export to GEDCOMChoose whether to include photo links and click Begin the export. You'll get an email with a download link. Photos aren't in the file, only links to them. Download them separately.
GeneanetOnline family tree Family Tree › Import/Export a GEDCOM File › Export › Export Family TreeChoose UTF-8 as the character encoding and click Download. You can do this with a free account. Export your current tree, not the most recent GEDCOM you uploaded: that one is missing your online edits. Photos aren't included.
AldfaerDutch desktop program Bestand › Exporteer GEDCOMThat is File › Export GEDCOM. Use the folder icon to choose where the .ged file goes, then click Exporteer. Settings are under Extra › Instellingen › GEDCOM-Export. Scans go along as links, not as files. Upload them in Pecktree after the import.
GensDataProDutch desktop program Bestand › Export › GedcomThat is File › Export › Gedcom. Choose Gedcom, not Gedcom van selectie (from selection): with a selection, the dossiers stay behind. Gedcom met pasfoto's (with portrait photos) creates a zip file; unzip it first. Photos are stored as file paths.
PRO-GENDutch desktop program PRO-GEN hulpprogramma's › Export › GEDCOM exportThat is PRO-GEN utilities › Export › GEDCOM export. Pick a starting person in the person list, then who comes along: related persons, ancestors, or descendants. Name the file and click Verder (Continue). The export starts from one person. After reading the file, check the counts to see that everyone came along.
What comes along from every program

People, families, events, sources with their repositories, standalone notes, and places, which Pecktree looks up and puts on the map. Scans and photos aren't stored in a GEDCOM file: the check counts the media objects the file refers to, and you upload those files after the import.

Questions about switching.

Yes. You can export a complete GEDCOM 5.5.1 file at any time, even on a free account and after you cancel.

Yes. Pecktree only reads your export file. Your original family tree doesn't change.

It's read in your browser. Nothing goes to our servers until you confirm the import. If you choose a different file, nothing has been saved.

A GEDCOM file only holds references to your scans, not the files themselves. The check counts the media objects in the file, so you know which ones to upload afterward.

Yes, choose an existing project under Target project. The people already in it stay; the import is added to them, and duplicates are not merged.

Try Pecktree for 14 days with everything in Professional, and import your whole tree. After that, choose a plan, or stay on Free and keep access to everything you imported.

Bring your tree in and see what comes with it. Fourteen days of everything in Professional.
